Married for a day?

BERLIN, GERMANY - A Polish couple living in Germany fell out after tying the knot and decided to end their marriage on the same day.

"He said he never wanted to see her again and wanted an immediate annulment, and she said the same thing," a spokesman for police in the northern city of Hanover said Thursday.

Right after the civil ceremony Wednesday, the 50-year-old man began arguing with his bride and tried to cut her hair with a kitchen knife, police said.

The 34-year-old woman called police, who issued the man with a restraining order, which he readily accepted, police said.

Two attempts at a rapprochement later that evening by telephone ended in more shouted exchanges before the man went to spend his wedding night in a local shelter for homeless people.

Brawl start by MJ Death

MIAMI, FLORIDA - A fight broke out on a Florida bus when news of Michael Jackson's death sparked debate over whether he should be remembered as a great musical talent, and one passenger was charged with assault, police said on Friday.

The bus was moving through the city of North Lauderdale on Thursday when passenger James Kiernan received a text message about Jackson's death on his cell phone, and he read it aloud on the bus, the Broward County Sheriff's Department said.

The unidentified bus driver opined that "Michael Jackson should have been in jail long ago," prompting Kiernan, 60, to retort that "the world just lost a great musical talent," the police report said.

It said the last remark enraged another passenger, Henry Wideman, who started a swearing match with Kiernan, then pulled out a knife and chased Kiernan down the aisle with it.

The driver called his dispatcher and pulled over near a convenience store to wait for sheriff's deputies, who arrested Wideman, 54. He remained in jail on Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

What you shouldn't do when selling online!

BERLIN, GERMANY - A thief in Germany was arrested after he tried to sell a garden mower online to the man he had stolen it from, police said Wednesday.

"The owner went to inspect the goods and recognized the mower as his own," said a spokesman for police in the southern town of Tuebingen. "Then he left and told police."

Officers confronted the 46-year-old suspect, who confessed to stealing the mower from a shed in February. He later put it for sale on internet auction site eBay, the spokesman said.

The great escape!

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - An 84-year-old man escaped with only minor injuries after he spent four days trapped in a well shaft on his remote property on Canada's Pacific Coast, police said.

A search dog located Bob Bennett on Wednesday after a friend of the elderly man became concerned that he had not heard from him in several days.

Bennett, who lives alone at a former mine site at Benson Lake, British Columbia, on northern Vancouver Island, had entered the eight-foot (2.4 meter) deep well shaft while searching for a water source and got trapped, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

"Mr Bennett, at 84 years old, shows age means nothing when you have the will to survive," said RCMP Corporal Michelle LeBrun.

Tribute to the King of POP...

Michael Jackson, 50, died Thursday in Los Angeles as sensationally as he lived, as famous as a human being can get.

He was a child Motown sensation who grew into a moonwalking megastar, the self-anointed King of Pop who sold 750 million records throughout his career and enjoyed worldwide adoration.

But with that came the world's relentless curiosity, and Jackson came to be regarded as one of show business's legendary oddities, hopping from one public relations crisis to another.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in Holmby Hills, Calif. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.

"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said. Police said they were investigating, standard procedure in high-profile cases.

In the end there were two sides to the record: The tabloid caricature and the singer that his fans will always treasure. There were those whose devotion knew no bounds, who visited the gates of his private ranch north of Santa Barbara, Calif., arriving at Neverland on pilgrimages from Europe and Asia, and who were among the first to flock to UCLA Medical Center as news of his death spread Thursday. Those were the same kind of fans who camped out at the Santa Barbara Superior Courthouse, to show their support during his 2005 trial. They released doves and wept when he was acquitted.

Then there was the other kind of fan, who preferred to keep memories of the singer locked firmly in his 1980s prime: Today's young adults all have memories of being toddlers and grade-schoolers who moonwalked. Even hard rockers will easily confess to the first album they ever bought: Thriller.

Sao Paulo, BRAZIL - Two Brazilian teenagers were arrested on the weekend for allegedly plotting to smuggle cellphones into a prison using a kite, reports said Sunday. Skip related content

According to police, the two unidentified adolescents were arrested late Saturday with two kites and mobile phones inside a building in Tremembe, a town outside Sao Paulo, the G1 news website reported.

Malaysia - Closed-circuit television footage caught the helmet-wearing, white jumpsuit-clad thief in the act as he used the forklift to ram the cash machine booth for 10 minutes, district police chief Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar told the Star daily.

Dutch muggers caught on Google street view camera

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS - Dutch twin brothers who mugged a teenager in the northern town of Groningen were arrested after being caught on camera by a car gathering images for Google's online photo map service, police said.

The pair stole the 14-year-old boy's mobile phone and 165 euros ($230) in cash last September.

"The picture was taken just a moment before the crime," a police spokesman said.

In March, the victim recognized himself and the two robbers while surfing Google Maps, which has a "Street View" feature allowing users to see images of buildings. The images are usually taken by a camera mounted on a car.

After an investigation by the police, one of the 24-year-old twins confessed to robbing the boy.

Tevez, also a target for Manchester City, Chelsea – who do not believe they will land him – and Liverpool, is 25 and United's initial reluctance to pay the £25.5m fee wanted by the investors who own his economic rights partly derived from a concern about what he might be worth to them towards the end of a five-year contract

Unveiling the blinking dress

Reporting by Catherine Bosley

LONDON, ENGLAND - Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova presented a prototype dress to reporters that is designed to light up when the wearer's mobile telephone rings.

British fashion student Georgie Davis dreamed up the knee-length sleeveless white dress as part of a school project with mobile phone-maker Sony Ericsson to figure out ways of incorporating new technology into fashion.

Davis said the dress is designed to eventually be connected to the wearer's phone by Bluetooth wireless technology, so she can be alerted to a call even in noisiest of places.

The right shoulder of the dress is embellished with translucent white scales that move and light up.

Sharapova showed off the dress to a gaggle of photographers and a crowd of passers-by from the window a luxury department store in central London.

Cocaine haul found hidden in frozen sharks

Reporting by Robin Emmott

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - Mexico's navy has seized more than a tonne of cocaine stuffed inside frozen sharks, as drug gangs under military pressure go to greater lengths to conceal narcotics bound for the United States.

Armed and masked navy officers cut open more than 20 shark carcasses filled with slabs of cocaine after checking a container ship in a container port in the southern Mexico state of Yucatan, the navy and Mexican media said Tuesday.

"We are talking about more than a tonne of cocaine that was inside the ship," Navy Commander Eduardo Villa told reporters after X-ray machines and sniffer dogs helped uncover the drugs. "Those in charge of the shipment said it was a conserving agent but after checks we confirmed it was cocaine," he said.

Drug gangs are coming up with increasingly creative ways of getting drugs into the United States -- in sealed beer cans, religious statues and furniture -- as Mexico's military cracks down on the cartels moving South American narcotics north.

President Felipe Calderon has sent 45,000 troops and federal police across Mexico to try to crush powerful smuggling cartels. But traffickers armed with a huge arsenal of grenades and automatic weapons are far from defeated, worrying Washington as violence spills over into U.S. states like Arizona.

Some 2,750 people have died in drug violence in Mexico this year, a pace similar to that of 2008, when 6,300 were killed.

Led by Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, smugglers from the Pacific state of Sinaloa are fighting a turf war with rivals. Guzman seeks to control Mexican and Central American smuggling routes into the United States.

US man dressed as dead mother to collect benefits

NEW YORK - A New York man has been charged with fraud after dressing up as his dead mother so he could collect more than 100,000 dollars in welfare benefits, prosecutors said.

Thomas Parkin, 49, and accomplice Mhilton Rimolo, 47, face a 47-count indictment for collecting social security benefits amounting to 52,000 dollars and 65,000 dollars in rental assistance, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes.

Prosecutors said the pair doctored Parkin's deceased mother's death certificate and provided a false Social Security number.

Parkin dressed in drag to impersonate 77-year-old Irene Prusik and visit the local Department of Motor Vehicles office to renew her driver's license.

As part of a separate probe into irregularities in the Brooklyn property in Prusik's name, Parkin and Rimolo arranged a meeting between investigators and the older woman.

When prosecutors and detectives arrived, they found Parkin wearing a red cardigan, lipstick and manicured nails.

Cats and dogs meet up online in Colombia

Not satisfied with social networking sites for humans, a Colombian engineer has launched mypetbum.com, which aspires to become a Facebook for cats and dogs.

My Petbum users can search the site for other pets, get advice from veterinarians or schedule muzzle-to-muzzle or paw-to-paw outings.

"It's an advanced form of interaction: people who participate in the forum do so because they are telling a story," site founder Paul Becerra, an industrial engineer and journalist, told El Espectador newspaper.

Becerra said the idea for a site came after a friend owning a boxer dog whose type is rare in Colombia was desperate to find a partner for the pet.

After the first 500 users signed up in Colombia, Becerra obtained a new server to boost access, with hopes to make the site a regional model.
